eight weekends · a case · dutch photobooth · mmxxvi

dutch photoboothone strip format. a different skin every weekend.

a photo strip is the only thing anyone takes home from the tent. it goes on the fridge and it stays there for a year, so it had better look like the night it came from.

eight photo strips in a row, each in the colours of its own festival

the brief. dutch photobooth rents a booth to village fairs, festivals and club nights. the booth is the same every time. the event never is. what they needed was not one logo on one strip, but a system: a print that could be re-skinned in the identity of whatever tent it was standing in that weekend, and still be recognisably the same product.

the dutch photobooth mark, which is the client’s own: spaced capitals reading dutch above a heavy black photo and a red script booth

the format. every strip is the classic 2x6 inch print, 1200 by 3600 pixels, cut the way a booth has always cut them. three photo windows stacked with equal air between them, and the whole bottom third given over to the event. that bottom third is the only part that changes. the windows never move, so the booth software never has to be reconfigured, and the operator can swap a design between two fairs in an afternoon.

where the colour comes from. none of these palettes are ours. each one is lifted from the event that ordered it: the bulb lights and the 1909 badge come with café de zaak, the palms with hype fest, the black and vermilion split with kermis heiloo. the studio’s job was to hold the grid still while everything hung on it changed.

four booth wrap panels laid out flat: left 90x189, front 76x189, side strip 35x189, right 90x189 centimetres

the booth wears it too. for the larger fairs the skin does not stop at the print. four panels dress the cabin itself, cut to the real millimetres of the frame, so the thing standing in the corner of the tent reads as part of the event rather than as a rented box with someone else’s logo on it. the strip in your hand and the booth you queued for are the same design.

a second booth. the first one folds flat and travels in a van. the second is being built now. the wrap system does not change with it: the panels are re-cut to the new frame and the same weekend logic applies, because the system was never about one cabinet.
